In Ayurveda, your unique mix of Vata, Pitta and Kapha shapes how you digest, feel and respond to life.
Most people have a dominant dosha or a blend of two. This mix influences your body shape, energy, mood, and how easily you handle stress.
When your doshas are balanced, you feel clear and steady. When they slip out of balance, the first signs often show up in digestion, sleep, energy or mood.
Light, dry, cool, mobile
When balanced: Creative, quick-thinking, adaptable
When out of balance: Anxious, gassy, bloated, dry skin, insomnia
Tends to: Thin frame, cold hands and feet, restless mind, variable appetite
What helps: Warm, cooked meals. Soups, stews, ghee, cooked grains. Favour sweet, sour, salty tastes. Go easy on cold salads and dry snacks.
Hot, sharp, intense, oily
When balanced: Focused, driven, good digestion
When out of balance: Irritable, overheated, heartburn, inflammation, rashes
Tends to: Medium build, warm body, strong appetite, prone to sweating
What helps: Cool, mild foods. Fresh greens, sweet fruit, coconut, mint, cucumber. Limit heavy spice, alcohol, fried or acidic foods if overheated.
Heavy, stable, slow, moist, cool
When balanced: Calm, caring, strong, steady energy
When out of balance: Sluggish, weight gain, mucus, feeling stuck
Tends to: Larger build, steady appetite, deep sleeper, can oversleep
What helps: Light, warm, gently spiced foods. Think ginger, pepper, bitter greens, lentils. Reduce heavy dairy, sweets and oily fried foods.
Most people aren’t just one dosha — they’re a mix. This mix shifts slightly with age, seasons and stress. Noticing your dominant pair can help you adjust your food and routine.
Vata–Pitta
Often slim or medium build, quick mind, energetic but can burn out easily. Swings between worry (Vata) and frustration (Pitta). Digestion may be sharp but irregular — hungry at odd times, then forgets to eat.
What helps: Warm, grounding meals — cooked veggies, mild spices, a little ghee. Avoid skipping meals. Cooling herbs like coriander or mint if Pitta flares.
Pitta–Kapha
Solid, strong build with good stamina. Can handle long workdays but may feel heavy or overheated if they overdo it. Appetite is steady but can lead to overeating.
What helps: Light, cooling foods — steamed greens, barley, herbs like cilantro and fennel. Reduce excess oil, heavy dairy and rich sweets if feeling sluggish.
Vata–Kapha
May look lean but gain weight easily under stress or when comfort eating. Can swing between high energy bursts (Vata) and stuck, tired phases (Kapha). Digestion is sensitive — bloating and heaviness both show up.
What helps: Warm, light, spiced meals — soups with ginger or cumin, simple grains like millet or quinoa. Avoid too many cold smoothies or heavy treats.
Tri-Doshic
Some people have a fairly equal mix of all three. They can adapt well but may get out of balance quickly if routines slip.
What helps: Eat simple, fresh meals. Keep warm in cold weather, cool in heat, stay active but not depleted. Notice which dosha feels dominant at any time and adjust meals gently.
• Body: Is your frame naturally thin, medium or sturdy? Do you gain weight easily or struggle to keep it on?
• Digestion: Light and unpredictable? Strong appetite? Heavy and slow? Do you get bloated, overheated, or sluggish after meals?
• Mind & Stress: Do you overthink, worry and feel scattered (Vata)? Get intense, competitive or irritable (Pitta)? Or feel stuck, unmotivated and heavy (Kapha)?
• Seasons: Which weather throws you off? Vata people feel worse in wind and cold; Pitta in heat and sun; Kapha in damp, heavy cold.
If you’re not sure, watch your daily patterns for a week — your meals, moods, energy — it’s the simplest way to see which doshas play the strongest role.
